Are You Using Apex Predator Marketing for IT?

Your marketing plan for IT needs to be of the trendsetting variety, not the trend following variety. It doesn’t matter how strong a given trend seems to be, it will fall by the wayside. If you jump on the bandwagon, you’re already behind the times. A good portion of the population has already grown savvy to the trend and won’t respond to it as they would to something entirely unique. The solution is to be the one who sets trends, not the one who follows. Or, at the very least, one who uses the trends in aggregate for a new and improved aim. In a phrase, you want to be an apex predator.

What is an Apex Predator?

An apex predator is at the top of the food chain. It’s a lion, a bear, a tiger, a cougar, a wolf, an anaconda, a T-Rex— you get the idea. Mankind is at the apex of apex predators, so admittedly, as an MSP, you’ve got your work cut out for you. But much marketing for IT doesn’t follow an apex predator strategy; it follows a trendsetter strategy. Many marketers use syndicated blogs— that’s following a trend. If your blog is the same as some other MSP’s, how is that authoritative? How is that leading the pack? That’s being a follower, a beta MSP. You want to be the alpha MSP, at the apex!

Qualities of apex predator marketing in the MSP world include:

• Standing out from the crowd
• Not targeting traditional backlinks
• Implementing guest blogs
• Being a “superstar” in Google reviews

Standing Out

You’ve got to be unique. You’ve got to stand out from the crowd. You must be memorable. Being memorable requires doing something which organically lodges in the mind of a prospective client. If you’re not an apex marketing predator, then your clientele game will skip off just like a gazelle avoiding a weasel.

Don’t Target Traditional Backlinks

Going the traditional route means you’re providing potential clients data they’ve likely already encountered. True, they may have previously encountered non-traditional backlinks, but this is much less likely. Think of it this way: if you’re in politics and going after a vote, who is going to increase your constituency more— the city comptroller of Los Angeles or Johnny Depp? Even if you get the whole city council on your side, voters are still going to follow after celebrity. Go with this strategy as you source backlinks. Find those which will increase clientele and you may seek professional assistance in that regard.

Guest Blogs

You’ve got to have your content posted on blogs which have already acquired a large audience. This doubles down on effectiveness and assists in establishing your blog’s authority.

Being a Google Reviews “Superstar”

You want to be well-reviewed on Google and you want to source as many reviews as you can. If necessary, write a review for clients, run it by them, and if they give you the go-ahead, publish it. This is convenient and effective.
